I’ve been a fan of microneedling for almost 3 years now. I’ve recently upgraded from my Gin Amber Derma Roller to a Dr. pen M8 microneedling pen. To make this switch, I need a slippery solution so that my pen can glide across my skin, while Dr. pen works its magic on me jabbing repeatedly (somehow this sounds more sadist in black and white than it was in my head).

Since there are plenty of ampoule and vial products marketed with EGF, peptides, stem cells or intense hyluronic acid solutions targeted for microneedling, I’ve decided to whip up my own potion. I found a Human Oligopeptide-1 solution from a local supplier, which has a suggested use of 5 ~ 20% and seemingly easy storage requirements. Many other EGF and peptides ingredient I found require storing at a low temperature in the fridge, with the exception of blue copper peptide, this particular EGF solution, and Acetyl Hexapeptide-3. I’ve decided to go with EGF this time, since I have only ever tried the 15% Vitamin C and EGF Serum from The Inkey List and am still curious about the effects of EGF.

Compared to my DIY Niacinamide Antioxidant Serum and some of my other DIY serums, I’ve used less water with the same amount of hyaluronic acid powder. This higher concentration creates more body to the solution, so it’s less drippy when I brush it across my face. However, I wouldn’t use this ratio for my daily serum as it can leave some dried up pieces of white gel residue when it’s not fully absorbed. I’d first add glycerin to the hyaluronic acid powder to saturate it first and to create a slurry. To be on the safer side, I’ve switched to Now Foods Solutions Vegetable Glycerin, a supposedly more clean glycerin from what I previously used.

I then add water to my hyaluronic acid slurry and give it a good whizz with with my handheld milk frother. I’d only use water and not hydrasol, as I’d prefer not to have any possible irritant penetrating deep into the skin. Once the solution becomes clear, I add in the EGF solution and give it a good whizz again. I then add in my broad spectrum preservatives. I’ve added relatively more preservatives, since I’ve found thicker serum tend to go bad sooner than a more watery solution with hydrasol.

I store this solution in dark bottles that are commonly seen to store essential oil. If you want to be fancy, you can purchase glass sample vials and a handheld vial crimper to package and to store it. I’ve even found sample vials with single-use plastic cap that don’t require a crimper. I was tempted to be a little more flamboyant with my DIY skincare packaging but my eco side has restrained me.

I use about 5 ~ 10ml each time when I microneedle. I use a brush to swipe it across my face in sections (forehead, left cheek, right cheek) and glide my mirconeedling pen across. My skin feels very plumped, hydrated, and has a luxurious baby-bum like texture after use. The verdict is still out on EGF for me. I shall test using the same hyaluronic acid solution below sans EGF to compare. If you cannot find the same EGF ingredient below like I do, feel free to try the concentrated hyaluronic acid solution for the glide and intense hydration.
